October 2009 first aid training regulation changes
From 1 Oct 2009 new regulations will come into force concerning the delivery, structure and authorised training providers of first aid training in the UK. Whilst these new changes are to be formally released by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) in the New Year and may yet undergo some minor changes, the following is advanced notice as well as a brief unofficial overview of the proposed changes.
Whilst there will still be a minimum requirement of an Appointed Person in the workplace, from 1 Oct 09 there will be another level of 'first aider'; the Emergency First Aid in the Workplace (EFAW). Still valid for 3 years, this new course must have 6 hours contact time. Importantly, from 1 Oct 09 the only training providers who the HSE will allow to deliver this recognised course will be HSE Approved Training providers or trainers who are registered with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA). OFSTED inspectors will not recognise certificates issued by companies or trainers who are not HSE/QCA Approved. Those AP certificates with issue dates before Oct 09 will be recognised until their expiry date.
