October 2009 first aid training regulation changed
From 1 Oct 2009 new regulations came into force concerning the delivery, structure and authorised training providers of formal first aid training in the UK. Whilst these new changes were formally released by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) in the New Year 2010 and may yet undergo some minor changes, the following was advanced notice as well as a brief unofficial overview of the proposed changes.
Whilst there will still be a minimum requirement of an Appointed Person in the workplace, from 1 Oct 09 there has been another level of 'first aider'; the Emergency First Aid in the Workplace (EFAW). Still valid for 3 years, this new course must have 6 hours contact time. Importantly, from 1 Oct 09 the only training providers who the HSE will allow to deliver this recognised course will be HSE Approved Training providers or trainers who are registered with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA). OFSTED or HSE inspectors will not recognise certificates issued by companies or trainers who are not HSE/QCA Approved.
